A Comprehensive Program
for the Integrated Treatment of Co-occurring Disorders

Research has shown that the most effective treatment for co-occurring disorders is an integrated approach that treats substance use and mental health disorders at the same time.

The Hazelden Co-occurring Disorders Program is the first comprehensive program that provides the best integrated treatment services for people with non-severe psychiatric disorders that co-occur with substance use disorders. This integrated treatment approach helps people recover by offering both mental health and substance use services at the same time and in one setting.

Evidence-based practices The Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center developed and tested the Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT) model, an established evidence-based practice designed for people with severe mental health disorders. The Hazelden Co-occurring Disorders Program draws on the numerous randomized controlled trials using the IDDT model and adapts them for patients with non-severe mental health disorders. The primary goal of the Hazelden Co-occurring Disorders Program is to offer current information and proven tools to effectively treat non-severe co-occurring disorders. The program is taken directly from research and best practices in the field. This program:

• Helps program directors assess and expand the capabilities of their current organization
• Offers clinicians an easy-to-use treatment program with tools that give clients and their families necessary services and support
• Integrates the most current best practices and therapies in the field, such as motivational enhancement therapy (MET), cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and Twelve Step facilitation (TSF)

The Hazelden Co-occurring Disorders Program also offers:

• Effective customizable strategies to treat clients' specific co-occurring disorders
• Evidence-based strategies and standardized best practices for treatment, mental health, and criminal justice
• Tools to help sustain clinicians' confidence and skills to assess and treat patients' co-occurring disorders
• Benchmarks to transform Addiction Only Services (AOS) or Mental Health Only Services (MHOS) to Dual Diagnosis Capable (DDC), and to transform a DDC program to Dual Diagnosis Enhanced (DDE) treatment
• Manualized integrated treatment interventions that educate and train new staff to treat both substance use and mental health disorders
• A DVD presentation that allows clients and family members to access the same educational information offered to clinicians and other health care professionals. This approach supports a key concept of effective treatment in which all participants are equal shareholders in deciding the best and most appropriate integrated treatment plan
• Screening and assessment measures to distinguish between drug-induced mental health problems and psychiatric morbidity and to help determine effective pharmacotherapy and psychosocial interventions
